A member of the environmental group, Heathrow Pause, prepares to fly a drone in the early hours of the morning next to Heathrow Airport, London, 2019.
In an attempt to shut down Heathrow Airport, an environmental group attempted to fly drones around the airport. The London Metropolitan Police were treating the activist group as a terrorist organization and many members were arrested in the hours before the attempted shut down.
Heathrow Pause chose allowed me to embed with them for the event.
As the police were treating the group as terrorists, the National Union of Journalists informed police liaison officer that there was an embedded journalist with the group. Via the NUJ, the police told me that they were authorized to use live rounds and so in the event that the police arrived at the scene, I was to hold my cameras and press card above my head and call out that I was a journalist. I followed these instructions to the letter when a line of police officers came running towards us with the police dogs.
I filed the pictures to The Telegraph before moving to a new location to photograph a second attempt to close the airport. At which point, despite working as a bona fide journalist, I was detained by the police and issued with an Anti-Social Behaviour Order banning me from being within 5km of the airport.
With the assistance of the NUJ, I subsequently received a formal apology from the Metropolitan Police and a promise to revise police training regarding the treatment of embedded journalists.
