Women in prison

In Mexico only half of female prisoners have been sentenced; the remainder are waiting in pretrial detention.

When they were first detained, most women were abused, or subjected to cruel and degrading treatment by the detaining authorities.  A quarter of them were sexually abused.  â€‹

In 2023, One World Media awarded me a fellowship to investigate women in prison.  This page summarises the project so far, some clips that will ultimately go towards a documentary and links to key data and information.

Mujeres Unidas por La Libertad

Run by ex-prisoners, the shelter in La Roma in Mexico City helps thousands of women in prisons to have a dignified period, have access to sanitary towels and basic toiletries.  They also campaign for women's rights, human rights and freedom of women who have been unfairly detained.

Dulce's Story

Dulce was detained in 2004 and was detained for 19 years before a court admitted that there was no evidence against her.  In 2023, she was released and started to rebuild her life and started a business making bespoke dolls,  whilst also working in a shelter that helped to free her.
